Over a third of the world’s agricultural land is considered degraded. Erosion, nutrient loss and salinization cause millions of hectares of land to become infertile every year.
2.2 billion people have no reliable access to clean drinking water. At the same time, agriculture uses 70% of the world’s freshwater resources.
In just one hundred years, around 75% of crop diversity has been lost. Today, three quarters of the world’s food energy comes from fewer than ten plant species.
The climate crisis is hitting those who contribute the least the hardest. Droughts, floods and heatwaves are destroying harvests in the Global South.
The hunger crisis is man-made – and it can be solved. Healthy soils, equitable access to water, diverse seeds and global climate justice are key to food security. Agroecology combines all of these elements.
Escape Hunger - why we need new ways to tackle the hunger crisis
Almost one in ten people worldwide still suffers from chronic hunger. Yet there would be enough food available. The causes lie deeper: soil, water, seeds and the climate – the foundations of our food supply – are coming under pressure globally. Small farmers in the Global South, who form the backbone of the world’s food supply, are particularly affected. Four topics exemplify why the hunger crisis is not a matter of fate, but is man-made and what solutions could look like.
