Hunger – how we can end it

In 2024, the world faces unprecedented challenges: 735 million people suffer from hunger, and a flawed global food system is exacerbating the crisis. The Global Food Report 2024 shows how the Sufosec alliance is helping to combat hunger and promote sustainable food systems through agroecological approaches.

Agroecology as a solution

Agroecology relies on environmentally friendly farming methods that protect the soil and promote biodiversity while strengthening the social and economic independence of farmers. In contrast to industrial agriculture, the focus here is on supporting local communities. The introduction of agroecological methods in small farms strengthens self-sufficiency and resilience to crises such as climate change and political conflicts.

Global challenges

Food insecurity is exacerbated by several factors:

  • Climate change and biodiversity loss: Extreme weather events threaten crops and the livelihoods of many people.
  • Conflicts and political uncertainties: Violence and instability lead to supply shortages.
  • Economic crises: High prices for food and agricultural goods hit the poorest hardest.
  • Restricted human rights: Civil societies are threatened in many regions and their opportunities for participation are limited.

Successes and impact

The results of the Sufosec household study confirm the success of the agroecological projects: between 2021 and 2023, the number of households using sustainable farming methods rose significantly, leading to an average reduction in food insecurity of 15%. Smallholder farms are benefiting from higher yields and better food security. With the help of training courses and regionally adapted solutions, over 135,000 households in the Global South have been reached.

Working together for a sustainable future

The Sufosec Alliance continues to advocate for a profound transformation of food systems. By promoting agroecological methods and working closely with local partners and scientific institutions, we are contributing to the sustainable fight against hunger and the improvement of food security. This not only strengthens local communities, but also creates a solid foundation for a more equitable world.

Case Reports

Under the umbrella of Alliance Sufosec, projects are taking place in 28 countries on three continents. In-depth information on six agroecological alliance projects that demonstrate the diversity and breadth of Alliance Sufosec: sufosec.ch/projekte

The Global Food Report 2024 was launched in Bern on 14 October. Agroecology expert Johanna Jacobi from ETH Zurich and Thomas Gass, study coordinator at Sufosec, presented the report’s findings. This was followed by a discussion of the study results by IZA and agroecology experts Martin Hasler (SDC), Ira Amin (Vivamos Mejor) and Veronica Massawe (SWISSAID). Moderator: Flurina Derungs (Vétérinaires sans Frontières Suisse).
